Most people head to a massage studio or wellness resort for a hot stone massage, but did you know that you can easily give yourself a hot stone massage at home? Whether it's for your partner, friends, family, or even yourself, it's all possible!
All you need are a few basalt stones, some massage oil (optional), and a comfortable spot to perform the massage. Voilà, your relaxing hot stone experience can begin!
The Stones Used in Hot Stone Massages
There are many types of stones that can be used for hot stone massages, but we recommend using basalt stones, as they retain heat for longer. It is important to always clean the massage stones before use.
Once the hot stone massage stones are cleaned, there are several methods to heat them. Professional massage therapists use a hot stone heater, but you can also heat the stones using other methods. The ideal temperature for the stones is around 45ºC to a maximum of 50ºC.
How to Give a Hot Stone Massage?
A hot stone massage can provide deep relaxation through the combination of heat and gentle pressure. Follow these steps to perform the massage effectively and comfortably:
-
Preparation
Have the person you are massaging lie on their stomach or back. Begin by massaging the body with your hands to warm up the skin. Be sure to use enough massage oil, as the heat from the stones will cause the oil to be absorbed into the skin more quickly.Tip: Add a few drops of essential oil to the massage oil for extra relaxation. Just be cautious with the amount, as the heat will enhance both the scent and effect of the oil.
-
Warming Up Your Hands
Before placing the warm stones directly on the skin, use them to warm up your own hands first. After that, place the stones aside on the massage table and begin massaging the person with your warm hands. This helps the skin adjust to the heat. -
Introducing the Stones
Next, take the stones and make one or two quick, light strokes over the body. It’s important that you barely touch the skin. This way, the person being massaged can get accustomed to the temperature of the stones.
-
Deeper Strokes
Once the person is accustomed to the heat, you can use the stones for slow, deeper strokes over the body. Start with light pressure and gradually increase it. Make sure to continuously check with the person being massaged to ensure their comfort. -
Placing the Stones
Before continuing with the massage on other areas, you can place stones on specific spots, such as along the spineor on the shoulder blades. This helps to maintain the heat and relaxation.
Important: Always place the stones on areas that you are not massaging at the moment. For example, if you are massaging the back, place the stones on the legs.
- Feeling the Heat
The stones can stay in place until they start to cool down. It’s important to regularly check if the stones are not too hot for the person being massaged.
Important: If the person being massaged says the stones are too hot, then they are too hot. Remove them immediately from the body. After working with the stones for a while, you might become less sensitive to the heat. Test this by placing the stones on your forearms.
Hot Stone Massage Techniques
It’s also nice to experiment with different techniques. You can hold the stones in your hands while making circular movements, creating vibrations, tapping, kneading, and more.
For example, you can combine a relaxing hand massage with a hot stone massage. The heat from the stones helps relax and calm the muscles.
Additionally, you can alternate the hot stones with cold marble stones. Cold stones are often used to calm swollen blood vessels.
Which Oil for Hot Stone Massages?
It is important to choose a massage oil for hot stone massages that can be heated to 60 degrees without the oil breaking down. It’s also preferable if the massage oil has a pleasant fragrance that has a relaxing effect. The combination of the heat from the stones and a good massage oil ensures that the massage runs smoothly and the skin is well-nourished. Additionally, the scent of the oil/essential oils can provide an extra relaxing effect, completing the massage experience.
The following base oils are perfect for hot stone massages and are odorless, allowing you to add essential oils for a pleasant fragrance:
- Grapeseed oil – Thicker, hydrating, and rich in antioxidants.
- Sweet almond oil – Nourishing, contains vitamin E, and is gentle on the skin.
- Jojoba oil – Hydrating, penetrates deeply, and doesn’t leave greasy residue.
- Argan oil – Rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, ideal for deep nourishment.
Important Things to Know When Giving a Hot Stone Massage
When you’ve finished the massage, it’s also important to clean the stones, even if you haven’t used any oil. Dead skin cells can stick to the surface of the stone. Give the stones a bath, dry them thoroughly, and store them in a sealed container/box once they are completely dry. You can read our blog about cleaning hot stones/massage stones here.
Additionally, it’s essential that you perform the hot stone massage techniques correctly. Taking a course with an expert can help guide you along the way!
